History & cultural significance
The Kino International was the premiere cinema of the GDR's DEFA studio and remains a fixture of German and international film culture. It has been a venue of the Berlinale (Berlin International Film Festival) since 1990. On 9 November 1989, the film “Coming Out” — the first DEFA film with an openly gay subject — premiered here on the very night the Berlin Wall fell. The house has hosted premieres attended by figures such as Steven Spielberg, Spike Lee and Tilda Swinton, and is home to Mongay, Germany's longest-running queer film series (since 1997).
